Sources & method

Zakat al-māl at 2.5% of the zakatable base once it reaches the niṣāb (85 g gold or 595 g silver), held for a full lunar year, after deducting due debts — the position agreed by the majority of scholars. The niṣāb and the quarter-tithe (rubʿ al-ʿushr) rate are established in the sunnah: for silver, “There is no charity on less than five awāq” (al-Bukhārī 1405, Muslim 979); for gold, the threshold of twenty dīnār (Abū Dāwūd 1573).
